How to Choose a Resume Writing Service

Be careful in choosing a resume writing service. So here’s what you should look for when selecting a resume writing service.

  1. Unless you think you are like everyone else, avoid the factories. Factories often use "cookie cutter" templates to produce a resume, so find a resume writer who will spend the time to understand how you are unique.

I talk with you, meet with you, and write your resume for you. I ask you questions that extract your unique background, expertise, skills, qualifications, and accomplishments to target the career position you seek.
  2. Ask them about their background and career. How do they communicate with you? Make sure you are speaking to a resume writer.

I was a journalism/public relations major at Suffolk University in Boston, MA, and moved to California in 1989. For more than 20 years, I have been a writer in the public relations, marketing, technical, and website fields. See my resume.
  3. Look at their samples. If you like their samples, you are more likely to like their work on your resume. Look to see if they are focusing on your expertise and accomplishments as opposed to simply listing job duties.
  4. Make sure you speak with the resume writer. A good resume writer will insist on speaking with you. This way, the resume writer can ask you insightful questions to highlight the skills and achievements that impress employers.

Choose a resume writer who has an intelligent conversation with you. My in-person (if you are local to Orange County, CA) or phone (outside of Orange County) interview with you will jog your memory and make you think about things that you have not thought about before or in a while.
  5. Get a free resume evaluation. A really good resume writer will welcome the opportunity to understand your needs and indicate how they would change your resume. A resume plays a role in your career and financial growth.
  6. Ask about the price. This is one of the most important documents in your career. So it makes sense to get a resume that you know will work and for you to work with someone who has your interests in mind.
